MI8 HIP Helicopter The Mi-8 HIP came from the design bureau of the brilliant Soviet helicopter pioneer Mikhail Leontyevich Mil, who died in 1970. A string of mass-produced and record- breaking helicopters remains the testament to his engineering and design skills. The Mi-8, a turbine-powered development of the Mi-4 ‘Hound’ (itself a shock to the West), was first seen in public at Tushino in 1961 and was powered by a single 2013-kW Soloviev turbine mounted above the cabin roof. Although the fuselage was new, with the pilot’s seats at the front instead of over the cabin, the helicopter employed the rotor hub. rotor
